About Me
Hi, I’m Sarah, and I’m probably somewhere in the world right now, writing about it.
I grew up in a small town in North Carolina where international travel was not really part of the conversation. It felt like something that happened to other people. Three years ago, just before I turned 30, I proved that wrong. I took advantage of a work trip, extended my stay, and explored on my own terms for the first time. I never really looked back.
How It All Started
It was not a dramatic moment or a life crisis that pushed me out the door. It was something quieter than that. I wanted to see the places that were not on everyone else’s list, wander without compromise, and stay as long as a place felt worth staying.
Growing up, nobody talked much about the world beyond what we already knew. The unspoken expectation was college, then back home, then marriage and kids and settling in. I have done exactly one of those things. But a trip to Ireland at 10 with my grandmother planted something in me, and studying abroad in Costa Rica in college cracked the door open further. When my job eventually started taking me places, I was ready.
I also had a secret weapon. I have always had a knack for turning complete strangers into friends. Solo travel did not scare me the way it scares most people, because I have never really felt alone in a room full of new people.
The Places That Have Pieces of My Heart
I get asked what my favorite place is more than any other question, and honestly, I think it is the hardest one to answer. Every place I have ever visited has left something with me.
- Belize where I spent time teaching school on San Pedro Island and remembered that connection is the greatest souvenir
- The Azores unlike anywhere I had ever seen, filled with remarkable humans, extraordinary food, and landscapes that felt almost too beautiful to be real
- Australia where I swam alongside the Great Barrier Reef and felt completely humbled by this planet
- Italy where I fell in love with absolutely every single aspect, full stop
And somewhere in Malaga, Spain, on a whim, I got a milk carton tattooed on my body. Because that is just the kind of thing that happens when you are open to wherever the world takes you.
Why I Write
I’ve been journaling and writing poetry for as long as I can remember. Growing up as a millennial, feelings were not always something you were encouraged to talk about openly, so I wrote them instead. The page became my safest place to process, escape, and make sense of the world around me.
Traveling and writing found each other naturally. Every new destination gives me something new to feel, and every journal entry helps me understand why I felt it. My poetry is not polished or perfect. It is honest, and it is mine.
Why I Started Sarah Travels Alot
I started this blog because I believe, deeply, that travel changes people for the better.
It makes us more empathetic. More curious. More human. And in a world that desperately needs more global, compassionate citizens, I think getting on a plane and sitting across from someone completely different from you might be one of the most important things you can do.
I also want you to know this: it is never too late to start.
I took my first solo trip at 29. I am 32 now, almost 33, and I am still just getting started. Whether you are 22 or 52, whether you have never left your home state or you have already got a passport full of stamps, there is a version of this life that is available to you.
